I did weights circuits because I knew I was doing cardio later at work (today would be a double workout sesh day, just because of the time and also I had no gym time in Canada so I was craving a little extra today!

I want to talk for a sec about the importance of spinning shoes!

In addition to being an ACSM certified personal trainer I am also SPIN certified. I love spinning. It is maybe one of my most enjoyable forms of cardio. I always look forward to spin classes and also teaching them as well. About a year ago when I got very into it, I purchased a pair of spinning shoes. I got them as a recommendation from an instructor who said “Just get them, they will change your life” so I did. And WOW, they changed my life!
BENEFITS:
  • Cycling is meant to not only use a down force on the pedal, but an upward pulling motion as well. Clip-in spinning shoes allow this motion. For spinning, this uses muscles you would not normally use without the upstroke. More muscles used means….you guessed it…more calories burned and more weight loss.
  • Even though the spinning cycle is stationary, there are safety issues with having feet slip off pedals. Most of these issues are magnified when standing up on the cycle. Clip in spinning shoes secure your feet to the pedals ensuring no pulled muscles, bruised shins, and various other pedaling injuries.
  • The smooth pedaling motion created by the constant connection to the bike allows all of your leg muscles to work in unison.
  • Spinning shoes are designed with a rigid layer near the balls of your feet to allow maximum power from your legs to reach the pedals.

The shoes have a clip on the bottom of them. This is the clip that clips into the pedal on the actual bike. You do buy this part separately (most of the time)

The shoe clips right in nice and easy to the bottom of the pedal.

Thats the clip on the shoe itself and the clip holder on the pedal. Its so simple and easy! My shoes I found on clearance at a bike store for about $75. They can be a bit pricey but if you bike or spin more than twice a week, this is one of the BEST investments you will make (well for fitness that is!)

At work I did 40 minutes on the spin bike and these were my stats from my HRM. Spinning really does blast calories! I love the rush I get from it!

Some post workout fuel of Yogoats! 1/4 C oats cooked in water mixed with 1 container of Chobani. topped with cinnamon and some PB

Gasm

Dinner was the last of the greens and beans soup made by mama fit foodie. She needs to open a soup restaurant! I topped with cholula

Kale, beans, potato, veggies, no salt. It was so healthy and delicious!

Turkey wrap with tomatoes, romaine, sprouts, hummus.

WHen I arrived home I made some Hummus!! This is the best thing I have discovered. It costs about 50 cents and it is SO good!

1 can of chickpeas
4 cloves garlic

fresh chopped ginger

(by the way, I have this in the freezer, it lasts a LONG time!!)

Added lemon juice, olive oil and some water. Bullet for 30 seconds and Voila! fresh hummus, salt free!

Currently watching AI then hitting the sheets. I am a tired girl! I have a special guest post tomorrow so look out for that!
  • Have you ever made hummus? What flavor should I try next?
  • Do you have any fitness gadgets that you LOVE? I love my HRM and spinning shoes!
  • What are you most looking forward to when the warm weather comes around? Running outside for meee!

I love spinning and have been on the fence about investing in some spinning shoes. I think I am convinced : ) I feel like I may get a better workout if I am properly outfitted, no?

LOVE hummus! Artichoke, spinach & parm is really good in it…YUM!

  3. Kelly says:

Alright, alright I know I need to get spinning shoes haha. I have been putting it off for so long because of the price and then I decided I wanted to get shoes that could work for spinning AND biking outside haha…needless to say I don’t think that is possible. I really have to just suck it up and pay the price haha

    HII!

As you know I took my first spin class last week and loved it. I tried to get into the Tuesday class this week but it was full. There are only 15 bikes there.. isn’t that crazy! I loved how intense it was it was such a good challenge.

I love making my own hummus. I usually use a mixture of 1 can chickpeas and 1/2 a block of tofu with whatever flavors I want to make it. Yummy and very creamy due to the tofu!

Ginger hummus.. I bet that would be tasty!

  5. marla {family fresh cooking} says:

Yes, gotta have spin shoes to be “at one” with the bike!
Your oats look awesome, I prepare mine the same way. Yes, homemade hummus is yummus!! Next up, go for sun dried tomato 🙂
I am giving away a cookbook at FFC I think you will be interested in 🙂

  6. sophia says:

TRY MY MISO HUMMUS!!! Please! NObody ever tries my recipes. I suppose they are too “crazy”, heh heh. But my miso hummus is harmless! And good! I swear! 😀

I don’t like spinning…but I would spin just for those adorable shoes!

  7. moretolifethanlettuce says:

i’ve never put ginger in my hummus, and i always add tahini instead of olive oil! but yours sounds and looks delish too, you can’t really go wrong with hummus :). nothing is better than a great night’s sleep! i love just hitting the pillow and being out like a light. i’ve seen those spinning shoes! cool!

  8. MelissaNibbles says:

Love the title of this post. I’ve never made homemade hummus. I’ve only started getting into hummus since reading blogs!
My favorite fitness gadget is the treadmill. I wouldn’t run in the winter if it didn’t exist!

  9. Fit Chick in the City says:

I totally agree with you on the importance of where bike shoes while spinning. I was just discussing their importance with someone yesterday.

Yes, I love making hummus from home. My favorite workout gadget would have to be the garmin my husband got me for Christmas. And as far as summer is concerned, really I just look forward to the warmth and cheerfulness of the sunshine on my face.

  10. Abby (Nibble, Nourish, Run) says:

Oooh love making hummus! I like to add in sun dried tomatoes or roasted peppers too…delish!

My fave workout gadget is my Garmin 405…AMAAAAZING for my runs! And while I’m still running (and freeeeezing) outside – I cannot wait until I can just throw on a tank and shorts and go instead of having to bundle up every time I want to run! Have a fabulous day miss!!

  11. faithfitnessfun says:

I love my spinning shoes too! I don’t invest in any gadgets for working out so I would have to say the shoes or workout clothes that I feel confident in are good investments 🙂

I am most looking forward to warm weather to be able to go on hikes again!

  12. Gina says:

I’m looking forward to being able to go for long walks outside!! Having the sun in my face, laying out and getting some color, I just can’t wait! Also the sights, the smells, the sounds, I’m excited, can you tell?!

I have never made hummus, which is crazy I know. Since I can’t really eat beans, hummus is on the bottom of my list (even though I realllllly love it). I may try it sometime and just take a ton of Beano!

I don’t have a favorite workout gadget, I’m boring. Does my iPod count?! The first time I used those clip on shoes it was on a regular bike and I whipped out, big time. Oops! I wasn’t used to it, clearly.

  13. Joanna Sutter (Fitness & Spice) says:

I totally LOVE my spinning shoes…I’ve had them for um…well over 10 years (gasp!) I won’t spin w/out them. 😉

Ok, hummus…I love traditional hummus but also pumpkin hummus, too. I make mine by subbing a can of pumpkin puree for the chick peas and spicing it up with red pepper. Mmmm!

  14. fitinthecity says:

I love making hummus. Do you ever add tahini (not sure how to spell that) in your hummus? It’s sesame seed paste. That’s how I was taught to make it. I’ve added roasted red peppers to my hummus before, which was really good. I’ve added horseradish to my hummus before to add a little kick. YUM!

  15. fitandfortysomething says:

Hummus is so good and easy to make! It is nice to come back from vacation and eat “normal” foods and get back into the normal routine isn’t it?
My fav gadget is the iPhone right now cuz I have everything on it including my runmeter.
    Love it!
    Have a good day!

  16. thebalancebroad says:

I’m SO glad you posted about spinning shoes….I just recently started to take spin classes (about a month ago) and LOVE it – I go maybe 3-4 times a week. A friend of mine who is also new to it just bought shoes, but they were over $100! You are right, though…if they make a huge difference, it’d be worth the money!

  17. Katie says:

A spicy hummus would be amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love hummus is yummus!!

Ok great so glad it is at your parents house safe!!! Love ya girl and hope you love the package! Muah!!!

  18. Anais says:

I’m super excited because I’m FINALLY going back to spinning classes on Friday! I don’t have spinning shoes though but hopefully it’s an investment I’ll make soon 🙂

I use the Nike Sportband which I love in many respects, but in others… I really wish I had a garmin! At this point though I feel invested in my sportband and would feel that I’d have to wear both if I ever got a garmin lol!

  19. Kacy says:

I love homemade hummus! It’s so easy to make! I said the word yummus on my blog yesterday too, haha.

I just tried spinning for the first time on Monday. Loved it!

  20. Danielle (Coffee Run) says:

I’ve never done spinning but it sounds like I’d like it! I like pretty much anything that makes you sweat 😉
I love homemade hummus. Damnnn girl you like garlic! haha I put in 2 cloves max.

I’m really looking forward to running outside in the SUN!

  21. Karin says:

I’ve been thinking of getting clip on shoes for some time now. It seems to be a pretty good investment indeed :).

    Your hummus looks amazing!

  22. Missy says:

I am so tempted to buy a magic bullet so I can make hummus! My favorite fitness gadget is my hrm! I need spinning shoes but don’t really go enough to invest in them. You may have convinced me though!

  23. Teri [a foodie stays fit] says:

Great post! Being able to clip in makes SUCH a difference and I wish all my class attendees realized this.

One suggestion to people with small feet: buy your spin shoes in the Youth section. I did and got a great deal! 🙂

  24. Julie says:

I’m looking forward to not freezing when it gets warm!!
My spin shoes are the best investment I’ve made….ever! hahah I love them and can’t imagine doing spin without them.

  25. Julie says:

wow what a GREATTT idea to keep garlic in the freezer! we always buy it in bulk and then a good portion of it tends to go bad 🙁 awesome tip girl!

i looveee me some spin! someday in life when i have the money and time i want to get certified but for now i’ll just reap the benes of everyone else’s classes haha

  26. Melissa says:

I’m glad you mentioned that you keep your cloves of garlic in the freezer. I have 4 heads of garlic sitting around and I was going to toss them. Now I know to just peel and freeze. Woohoo!

  27. biz319 says:

Roasted red pepper hummus is one of my favorites!!

I totally miss my spin class – our office moved and my gym by my house has no classes 🙁

  28. One Healthy Apple says:

I love spin, but I can never get there on time because of my crazy work schedule!

I love homemade hummus, but rarely make it. I think I may have an experiment tonight!

I’ve made sundried tomato (use standard recipe and add a few tomatoes)!

I’ve also done a cilantro lime and a pesto hummus too.

    Have a great day!

  29. Haleigh says:

I used to make my own hummus when I lived in Sweden and couldn’t find any but I have gotten lazy since I moved back to the states and can’t get enough of Sabra’s. Ah-mazing looking turkey wrap.. the add in of sprouts sounds great! I think I will give it a try! I hope you have a good day! xoxo

  30. Heather Iacobacci-Miller says:

I love making my own hummus. You can flavor it up so many ways. One of my favorites is adding sundried tomatoes or roasted red bell peppers. I can’t wait for it to warm up so my hubby and I can run outside again.

  31. Christina says:

i think you might be my new hero! first of all, your oats don’t look like slop. before even reading that, i saw them and thought “ooh so colorful.” a lot of times when i use frozen fruit, they look so ugly i don’t even want to photograph them! and your hummus! i’ve made hummus before and it was pretty freakin’ blah. i’ll try your recipe next. i really think i need a magic bullet!

  32. Erica says:

Hey girl! How are you? Loved reading about the importance of spin shoes. And what a fabulous looking lunch salad. Love yellow peppers! I make my own hummus all the time! Broccoli Hut’s blog has TONS of recipes. My favorite is her artichoke hummus- I’m actually making it tomorrow. Have a great weekend
