Happy Birthday, Mom & What a Cake!!

First I want to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MAMA!!!!! My mom is my best friend and the most amazing woman on this planet. I am so very happy today is her day and I LOVE YOU

You know what is one of my biggest pet peeves? When someone is watching what you are eating and make a rude comment such as “ew, how are eating that?” when in fact this may be one of my favorite things to eat! I call it yucking other peoples yums” I just think it is one of the rudest things a person can do! who knows if that person eating the not so appetizing looking food may have some food allergies, or cannot eat certain foods for say, religious reasons which is why they are eating this way.

This has certainly happened to me in the past, if I am somewhere and need to buy lunch or bring healthy snacks with me, I sometimes get the “why would you bring THAT with you”

Has anyone ever yucked your yum? How did you deal with it?

ok, now lets get onto some delish eats for the day!

Breakfast was anything but Yuck. it twas most definitely Yum

1/2 C oats, chia, cinnamon, 1/2 nanner, berry mix from Trader Joes (pictured below)

With some All natural Smuckers PB

Berry blend from TJ’s-I really like this beacuse there are frozen cherries in there! I am used to getting just  blueberries or just strawberries. This combo was mucho deliciouso!
I made a smoothie to bring with me to work. I know I wanted to use the Superfood blend from Amazing Grass.  I was going to make a berry based smoothie (obv with my new berry blend from Trader Joes) So I chose to use the Berry Superfoods

Berry Green Superfood from Amazing Grass

Berry Berry Good Smoothie

Berry Blend Frozen

Add Mangoes and 1/2 banana

Add 1/2 C almond breeze, AmazingGrass packet and Blend!

This was so frothy and delicious. I will be honest that I have to get more used to this Amazing grass. It does have a bit of a gritty, grassy taste to it that at first I was not so much into, BUT as I kept drinking it, I came to really enjoy it! This was delicious!

Naomi’s Berry Berry Smoothie
1/2 C almond breeze
frozen mangoes
1/2 banana
berry blend
amazing grass packet
water/ice
Agave
Lunch

Started with an Arnold Thin and LC

Arnold Thin, Lean turkey breast, romaine, tomato, red onion, laughing cow
And some salad on the side drizzled with Balsamic & EVOO

Workout
Today was my so called “random workout day” This is the day where I don’t have anything set in stone because I am still somewhat sore from my workout on Monday with my Trainer, But I wanted to get around and sweat! I ended up doing
  • 23 minutes on the treadmill, ran 2 miles, walked uphill on 10% grade at 3.8 speed for the rest
  • Spinning on the bike for 13 minutes
  • military presses
  • Push ups
  • woodchoppers
  • lots of ab work

I have to say this was a great little random workout!

*Do any of you go into the gym with no agenda in mind? Sometimes those can be the best workouts, right??”

Post workout Snack- Again, Anything by Yuck!

Kay’s  natural Honey Almond Cereal.

Pumpkin & Chobani mixed with the Kay’s Cereal.
YUM.
Dinner was a boring repeat of my Pumpkin Chili Recipe . It just keeps getting better!

With a dollop of Plain Chobani

with a side salad: Romaine, cuke, tomatoes, brocolli, balsamic glaze
—————————
It was a great day! however around 3:30 I was certainly feeling that afternoon slump. Let me first say this. I love coffee, I don’t go a day without it, but I try to have just 1-16oz cup a day. (thats a medium at starbucks or a classic medium coffee at any shop) In college I often had those energy drinks to help perk me up during my studies or if I was having a ‘slump’ After a while when I would drink them, I would get this shaky, anxious feeling and I would actually feel my heart beat much faster. I hated this feeling and cut out energy drinks all together.  I also started wondering exactly what I was putting in my body. I saw all these ingredients without knowing anything about the effects they could have. I cut out energy drinks all together,  I am not against anyone that uses them to help them with their afternoon slump, but for me personally, cutting them out made me feel so much better

Here is an article from Shape Magazine with some info on energy drinks
1. Taurine
This naturally found amino acid is typically offered as a dietary supplement, but it’s also found in fish and meat. Some sources suggest that you can take up to 3,000 milligrams of this supplement a day, however you should always be weary of consuming high doses. So far, the attitudes towards this acid are inconclusive, yet positive. “Taurine’s effective role in energy drinks alone requires more study, as it’s usually one of several ingredients that commonly tout a variety of claims, from decreasing sleepiness to improving concentration, mood and memory,” says Marisa Moore, R.D., spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association.
2. Caffeine
This stimulant has been at the center of heated debates for years. The results are always mixed: Caffeine may protect against ovarian cancer, but it also raises the risk of a miscarriage. A study of energy drinks conducted at the University of Vienna, Austria, found that combining caffeine and taurine improves mental performance of drinkers. That being said, caffeine can become addictive when taken regularly and should be consumed cautiously.

Are They Safe?
Energy drinks contain so many different herbs and supplements that they create a murky broth with unknown effects. Ginseng and ginkgo biloba, which are also common ingredients, can affect other medications you’re taking. “Gingko biloba may increase the risk of bleeding, which is a real caution for those who take blood thinners or who have a surgery or dental procedure scheduled,” says Moore.

The best thing to do is limit your consumption of these drinks, or even better, go au naturel. “If you feel the need for energy to fuel a workout or something during snack time, try a banana, granola bar or other whole grain energy bar,” adds Moore.

Do any of you use energy drinks to help you with that afternoon slump, or what are your general thoughts on the topic??

I will leave you all with a pic of the amazing cake we got my mom at JP Licks which is a local Ice cream shop (local to Boston) It is their layered oreo yogurt cake.
Two layers of Oreo yogurt with homemade fudge nestled in the center. Sides are wrapped in crushed Oreos, and Oreo halves top the cake. Yeah, that was nothing to Yuck at either

Alright off to say Goodnight and HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my mom again, and head to bed! Tomorrow morning I will be hitting the gym!

Song that I will be singing in my sleep: Lady Gaga “bad Romance”

OMG I am LOVING the cake! I love Amazing Grass…I think you will get used to it. Did you have more energy?? I did immediately, but I don’t ever drink any caffeine so I’m not used to a certain boost. I love it tho!

  2. katie says:

Love your smoothie recipe! Will have to try it! Oh my gosh that cake looks sooooo good, I want a piece now!! lol! Thanks for linking my giveaway!!!

  3. Julie says:

Hahah I was JUST thinking earlier that I hate Lady Gaga but I’m not so much hating her new song. Someone on the radio said it sounded like drunk kareoke. But I think it’s good. haha ugh.

I HATE YUM YUCKERS. I give them snotty looks that make them feel like the size of the almond i’m eating.

    must. make. pumpkin. chili. pronto.

    happy birthday ma!!!!

  4. One Healthy Apple says:

  5. funnyemily says:

omg my brother is constantly telling me how gross everything i eat is. about all i can do is ignore him, then say i told you so when he actually tries some and admits that it does taste good!

happy birthday to your momma!! awesomeee cake! 🙂

  6. Mari says:

Grrr for some reason your posts were not listed on my blog list =( sorry for being MIA! I saw you did the honest list =) YAY!

    Happy birthday to your mom!!!!!!!!

My fam is always making faces at the food I eat…they refuse to try Green Monsters lol

  7. Caroline says:

I completely agree with you on the “yucking your yum” thing. I get it all the time. Especially with Amazing Grass (which happens to be one of those drinks that I go to for energy by the way), I know it’s green and weird looking but I think it’s so rude to just dismiss someone’s food like that without even asking about it. Everyone is entitled to eat whatever they like but I try hard not to judge others food choices even when they are eating something I find horribly unhealthy. Good topic!

  8. peanutbutterfingers says:

i love random workouts… they’re great for busting out boredom.

also i 100% agree about hating those who “yuck my yums” – i love tuna & egg salad but they’re stinky & people will often comment about the odor in the break room… sorry! it’s too darn delicious to give up!

  9. forthehealthofit01 says:

Gurllll, people yuck my yum EVERYDAY! It’s the story of my life. lol. I’m use to it tho. I know I like weird stuff.

I like random workouts too, but I do those at home. When I hit the gym it’s all about the GROUP FITNESS for me. I heart taking & teaching GF classes!

Ahh, looove JP Licks! Especially their Oreo yogurt. Yum.yum.yum. I love the term “yucking your yum” – I remember once I was chopping up sweet potatoes to make sweet potato fries and my roommate came in asked me what I was making and then said “Oh… yeah that sounds awful..sweet potatoes are gross.” — I was like uhhh…okay?

  11. Melissa says:

Hope your mom has a Happy Birthday! JP Licks is amazing.

I feel like most of my workouts are totally random. So I’m trying to plan ahead of time. Already mapped out what I’ll do next week!

  12. Missy says:

Happy Birthday to your mom! That cake looks amazing!! I have it when people comment on what I am eating! It happens all the time while I am at work! People should mind their business!

Now I want a smoothie! That looks so yummy!

  13. Katie says:

I’m so glad I just found your blog (again!) on Caroline’s – I had come across it before, but somehow LOST YOUR LINK!! Whoopsies – but so glad to be reunited, I will now add you to my reader.

Also – I am always extremely offended when people tell me my food “looks gross” – it happens all the time, and I take it as a personal insult. Happy Birthday to your mom!

  14. healthhappinesshope says:

I totally agree that the Amazing Grass takes some getting used to. I used to have it in my smoothies almost every day during the summer but stopped this past month or two now that’s it’s been colder. Well, I tried it a few days ago in a smoothie and couldn’t believe how strong the “grassy” taste was!

Great info on the energy drinks! I have to admit that I will have the occasional sugar free red bull, but I think most energy drinks are fine in moderation.

    HAPPY B-DAY TO YOUR MOM!
