I do My Thing In the Gym,,,

Happy Friday, friends! how was everyones day and week? Mine was SUPER busy! but thats okay, because when things stay busy, that makes the days FLY by!

Yesterday I had the BEST oatmeal bowl. I love the addition of just a touch of SF syrup. I try not to use that much but just a little goes a long way for me! There are egg whites underneath there!
Yesterdays lunch also ROCKED. I had some left over tofu for the protein, baby spinach base with cucumbers and tomatoes and 4 oz sweet potato for the startch! Loved all of the flavors in this salad

Enter my current snack obsession. Greek yogurt with brown rice and cinnamon. I can’t get enough! I bag the rice right when I cook it so its easy to grab and go.
I also got my new MGN protein powder (I order it from www.Muscleandstrength.com) I already have the cake batter and ice cream sandwich–both which I LOVE.
I went there. yeah. And verdict? LOOOOOOOVEEEE. So delicious it truly tastes like rocky road!! Not too chocolatey or sweet.
I mixed 1 scoop with water/ice, 1/4 t each xanthan & guar gums and 1/2 C almond milk in my magic bullet. Blend for 45 seconds and you have pure deliciousness.
This morning for my cardio, I did some incline walking. I didn’t want to run because my weight training workout later had some sprints involved, so I didn’t want my legs to be too tired! I enjoyed some oatmeal, egg whites and blueberries post cardio time!
And came home to throw together SUCH a good salad! I topped it with grilled chicken, sweet potato and balasamic vinegar/glaze
Sweet potato atop salads–>try it!
And the JUICIEST tomato from a co-workers garden!

GYM TALK
Ok. Ill admit It. I LOVE the gym, but really it’s a very strange place. Let’s think about this. People come and go as they please, some with no idea what they are doing, others with extreme, intense focus. We sweat together, grunt together, take classes together and even gossip together. There is a sense of camaraderie in the gym, just knowing that people all around you, although may not be there for the same reason as you, we all are there at least to maintain and stay healthy.

The gym possesses a unique subculture and its own set of etiquette that some people may not be aware of. It can be quite hard and intimidating to start working at a gym without knowing some basics about the environment.

When I get on a treadmill about 3 inches away from the person next to me, it feels…normal. Some people would hate working out so close to a stranger with sweat in their face, breathing hard, rocking out to pump up music; but to me, it feels normal. I don’t mind working out next to complete strangers, because to be honest I am in my own little world when I enter the gym. I always have my headphones in, and focus on, so It really doesn’t even phase me that there could be a bodybuilder next to me grunting away. I always do my thing.

Every day I go to the gym, I see something different that makes me want to laugh, cry, or think. It is a great spot to people watch, that’s for sure. I am working out at my old gym again because I recently moved, and I noticed an older man (maybe 50’s) who I used to see there every day. He was in decent shape, moved around a lot, did some circuit style training, ran on the treadmill etc; The “typical” stuff. The other day I see him, he must have put on 20 lbs. He was walking around the gym like a mad man with workout gloves on. He looked extremely intense, yet whenever I saw him, he was just walking around. I never actually saw him lift a weight. (Okay, I saw him do ONE set of rear delt raises) but other than that he was just looking at himself in the mirror, speed walking around like he had somewhere to be and fixing his workout gloves. This isn’t the only time I have seen this, but I just thought it was odd. No disrespect to this man, he did put the effort in to get to the gym but it made me think, why come to the gym if you are not going to actually work out? My time at the gym is precious, I try to make the MOST of the time I spend there, follow my program, and get the heck out—but that’s just me.

This brings me to my next observation; The social butterflies. Is it just my gym or does yours sometimes feel like a bar in downtown Boston. (or whatever crowded bar in your area) I swear there are some people who come to the gym JUST to chat, gossip and pick up members of the opposite sex. Don’t get me wrong, the gym is a GREAT place to meet a future boyfriend/girlfriend/husband or wife, but to get in your car, drive to the gym for the sole purpose of…schmoozing? I don’t think this something I would do. I am not judging those that do it—these are just my thoughts. The women who come to the gym, looking better than I do 95% of the time, full makeup, full blow dried hair, cute matching outfits and even matching Nikes! (Yes, I see this all the time) grab a coffee and chat–And I don’t workout at a gym that has an attached café where they can ‘chat’ My advice for avoiding the social butterfuly if they come your way. WEAR THOSE HEADPHONES

After all my ramblings, I would like to conclude: The gym is where I focus. The gym is where I feel inner strength and empowerment. The gym is where I can be selfish and just concentrate on ME. The gym is where I don’t need to tell anyone what I am doing and why. The gym is where I see results. The gym Is where I don’t have to think about work or life or anything besides my training. The gym is where I set goals and achieve them. The gym is where I challenge myself mentally and physically.

With all of this said, you absolutely do NOT need a gym to get in shape, stay in shape, lose weight, or maintain your weight. Use the workout bible I put together to make your own workout using JUST your body–anytime, anywhere!
