Kitchen Gadgets? Anyone?

Well bloggies, that dreaded time has come…good ole’ Sunday Evening. The night before another work week. Its always so sad when that time rolls around,  especially after such a great weekend. BUT bloggies, I am not just sad its Sunday, I must admit I am sad for tomorrow as well. The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur has arrived this evening at sundown. This holiday arrives 10 days after Rosh Hashaha (the apples and honey post?) During Yom Kippur, we are supposed to reflect on all the wrong doing that has taken place in the past year, forgive those we have hurt and just take time to reflect, oh did I mention we FAST? meaning we are not supposed to eat the entire day. There for, This is not a foodie’s favorite holiday

BUT before this day of no food, I need to post the delicious eats that took place last night and today!

The BF (Jason) I just realized I had not introduced his name to you all, SO Jason, or J as I call him, thats the BF. We went out to grab a bite to eat downtown Boston at Match Burgers and Martini’s. They are known for their mini sliders and martinis-neither of which I got, ironically. The drink menu is very extensive and filled with creative martinis with unique names such as the “east meets west” martini made with lychee berry and the “pop rocks” martini which is a fruity cocktails rimmed with pop rocks candy!! I have gotten these martini’s before, but they are very sweet and I was more in the vino mood, so a glass of pinot it was!

We got the asian chicken salad to start with greens, mandarin oranges, scallions, shredded carrots, chow-mein noodles and a ginger soy dressing
Rating on scale 1-10: I’d give it a 5. this was not the best chinese chicken salad I have had before (cheesecake factory still remains on the top of my list) Neither of us could taste the dressing and J said “hmm this is surprisingly light” I don’t think he meant that in a good way. It was just OK, trust me, it was eaten till the plate was clean, but left us with lots of strong flavors of sesame ginger soy dressing. It also could have used some slivered peanuts or almonds in there…Just sayin’

Next up was the entrees.

J got the classic cheeseburger slider and a side of steak cut french fries. How cute is that lil burger?? He finished it in about 3 bites…I told him to get another! but he was good to go after those fries

My meal: Blackened salmon with honeydew melon salsa, sauteed spinach and and risotto cake.
Now before we get to the food talk, take a look at this plate and the size of the meal? I mean this was a decent size piece of salmon, maybe 5-6 oz BUT the plate was WAY too big, I think it made the fish look skimpy and loney. This dish certainly could have benefitted from a smaller plate!
upclose bite of the salmon atop the creamy risotto cake and sauteed spinach. there could have been some more spinach in there!

Scale 1-10: I would give this an 8. The salmon was cooked perfectly! it was that kind of ‘melt in your mouth’ salmon, just buttery and crispy from the marinade and blackening on the outside but delicious on the inside. The risotto cake was creamy and crunchy. It was a very nice balance to the salmon, both were crusty on the outside and soft on the inside. I really like risotto cakes because they still have that crunch to them. This cake was HUGE! I gave some to J I couldn’t finish it all!
Honeydew melon salsa

This may have been the best part of my dish! I felt like I was on the tropical islands! what a great idea making such a fresh and light salsa to balance the hot fish and risotto cake. It was a beautiful lime green color and let me tell you, I licked this salsa dish clean!

Sunday Morning!
Woke up with one thing on my mind. O-A-T-S. YES!!! I was so psyched for this big bowl of oats! I find that I like to use more water than normal because it makes more in the bowl. I go for max volume here, ya dig?
In the oats mix
  • 1/2 C oats
  • 2 cups of that dirty water (Obviously not dirty, Im from boston, so i just love that dirty water)
  • 1/2 nanner
  • lots of cinnamon
  • 1 packet truvia
  • frozen blueberries
  • 3 frozen strawberries
  • chia
  • 1 tbsp almond butter (not pictured)
I had to take a picture of all these banana’s J has at his house! I mean look at all of them! I told him I wanted to make banana bread or something! Or maybe feed some hungry monkeys that are missing their banana’s because J stole them all!
we had to do some errands around town including going to Crate and Barrel it was there that I found the most amazing kitchen gadgets EVER!! Has anyone really taken a look at some of the gadgets they have at this store?? its ridiculous!
First, some cookbooks, yes thats a cookbook dedicated to cupcakes!!

Next up a pepper grinder station! Yes you can acutally try the pepper grinders out BEFORE you buy!

Next up, some more gadgets

we got here an egg poacher (in yellow) and an egg separator (in white) just some crazy, rubbery gadgets I have never seen before!

these are officially the BIGGEST pancake spatula’s I have ever seen!! I mean I know we all like a big pancake but seriously, Crate and Barrel this thing is wack! (for lack of a better term)

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE KITCHEN GADGET???

Lunchtime hit and Panera it was. I got it to-go because J wasn’t hungry so this is my shot of the chicken apple fuji salad in the car! This salad has
  • apple chips
  • romaine
  • grilled chicken
  • gorgonzola (not my fav cheese, but I eat it)
  • tomatoes
  • red onion
  • pecans
  • fuji salad dressing

I really like this salad, the apple chips are awesome!! MUCH better than bread croutons for that extra crunch in the salad. One thing I don’t like about this salad is the dressing! It is the fuji salad dressing and it tastes like artificial apple mix that is filled with sugar and fake flavoring. I forgot to ask for the balsamic vinegrette on the side BUT to be honest, when I get a salad with lots of cheese, I don’t need dressing anyways!

WHAT A DELICIOUS DAY!!!

Hey Naomi! Thanks for the comment! My favorite kitchen (I don’t have very many) is the silicone baking sheet cover. It’s awesome! I won it in a raffle and I love baking with it. It makes clean up super easy–no crusty cookie sheets!!

Great review of that restaurant. Everything sounds pretty decent, but I totally agree that those plates are just a TAD too big. 😉

OMG, I am completely with you on the bananas. I just hate seeing any go to waste! If I ever have too many going brown, I’ll quick throw them in the freezer before they get bad for smoothies or soft serve.

    Thanks for the shout out!

I’ve been to Match many times, but never eaten there. I can only tell you about their fabulous drinks and the one hot bartender that is probably the finest man alive 🙂

My favorite kitchen gadget right now is my Foreman Grill. I can grill anything on it, make paninis and cleanup is a snap.

To answer your question about spiraling zuchini, I just cut the zucchini lengthwise in strips then take either a peeler or knife and cut matchsticks out of those pieces. Does that make sense? I’m sorry if I’m not explaining it well.

    Good luck fasting!

Hey chica! How are you? Sounds like you had a fabulous weekend and I love the blog!! Dinner out looks great- I like the idea of the melon salsa, yummy!! Good luck with the fasting today. hmmm not sure what my fav kitchen gadget is, but tool wise- I couldn’t do it without a spoonula

  6. Gina says:

Well at least you are honest in your reviews 🙂 That’s good!
I have to say my favorite gadget is my steamer. I have two; one is very large, and it fits meat and veggies at once, and my other is simple and just slides into the saucepan. I use it twice a day! I love it.

Enjoy the fast. It will be over soon!!

I love my kitchen scale for measuring out grains. It lets me make the perfect ratio of oatmeal to water every time. i don’t think I’d know how to make them otherwise
